Universal safety rules
- Fake exchange counters: only use licensed bureaus with visible rate boards and printed receipts — walk away from "too good to be true" rates offered on the street.
- Card skimming: cover the keypad when entering your PIN and check for loose or unusual attachments on card slots.
- Unsafe ATMs: prefer ATMs inside banks or airports over free-standing street machines, especially at night.
- Currency exchange scams: count cash before leaving the counter and be wary of distraction tactics during the handover.
- Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC): when paying by card abroad, always choose to be charged in the local currency, never your home currency — DCC hides poor exchange rates and extra fees.
